Research map — staged

Convict-Leasing Geography

Were Madison County prisoners leased to Jefferson County mines, and did any die there? This page lays out what the October 2, 2026 desk research documented — Jefferson County mine sites, five named mine-fatality leads, and the records that could answer the origin question — without claiming coordinates that don't exist in the research files.

How to read this map. The diagram below is a schematic, county-level layout — not a geographic map. No GPS coordinates exist for any of these sites in the research files, so none are pinned to a basemap; county positions and site placements are illustrative. The mine-fatality names are leads, not proof — a Madison County birthplace and convict status are unverified for every one of them. Each card below carries an evidence badge and the open question that would confirm or kill the lead.
