Avalon Plantation Boundary (working map)
This page holds the core spatial claim of the project — and is honest about what it does not yet have. No boundary is drawn here. A guessed polygon would invent evidence, so this page states the boundary question, lists the documented anchors, and names exactly what records would resolve the boundary.
The boundary question
Alexander P. Jones's 2,827-acre share of Lewellen Jones's estate — per the annotated will transcription — sits on the present-day UAH campus plus Redstone Arsenal, in the Northwestern Division of Madison County. Tracing the deed chain from the plantation's land to the modern campus is how the project pins where enslaved people's lives were actually lived: the 1860 slave schedule manuscript gives 96 enslaved people on this holding (the 1850 schedule gives 139), and UAH's 2019 announcement documented 35 associated structures on the site.
The boundary is the single spatial claim everything else depends on — where the quarters stood, where the burial grounds are, what UAH built over. Until it is resolved from the records below, any boundary on this page would be a guess, and this project does not publish guesses as findings.
Documented anchors
- APJ's 2,827-acre share. Alexander P. Jones's share of Lewellen Jones's estate, per the annotated will transcription: present-day UAH campus + Redstone Arsenal, Northwestern Division, Madison County. Verified (manuscript). DB1 row 618; paper notes [180], [196]. Anchor only — not a surveyed boundary.
- 1860 enslaved population at Avalon: 96. The 1860 slave-schedule manuscript, read entry by entry (2026-09-21). UAH's 2019 announcement repeated 106 — Alexander P. Jones's total 1860 holdings across all his schedule entries (schedule p. 483), not the Avalon-specific count — and the distinction is now stated. Verified (manuscript). Clarified Oct. 2026.
- 1850 enslaved population: 139. The 1850 slave schedule, manuscript re-verified. Verified (manuscript). DB1 rows 691–700.
- 35 associated structures (2019). UAH's 2019 announcement documented 35 associated structures on the site; institutional expansion in the 1960s reduced surviving markers to a small fraction of that population. Documented.
- 1964 UAH campus assembly boundary. 323.250 acres: 113.440 net north of Holmes Avenue; 209.810 south of Holmes (City of Huntsville 83.000, City Board of Education 29.470, "Col. Jones" 11.300, Dilworth 134.203, Sanderson 30.617, "McThornmor" 35.870, plus smaller Jones/Moore/Parks parcels). Verified institutional memo (campus-level boundary). Avalon/UAH_campus_land_docs_1962-71 (CamScanner 8-5-26 13.36_46.pdf, _48.pdf). DB1 row 987. This describes the 1964 campus assembly — a modern institutional boundary, not the plantation boundary.
- 1971 10-ft utility easement corridor. East boundary of Sparkman Drive, SW1/4 SE1/4 Sec 4 T4S R1W north to SW1/4 SW1/4 Sec 33 T3S R1W (Holmes Avenue) — verified legal description at corridor level. May 1971. Verified legal description (corridor-level). DB1 row 990. Legal descriptions of the surrounding deeds remain unread.
Boundary data needed
Exactly what would resolve the boundary. Each item names a record type, where it lives, and what it would give the map:
- Madison County probate deed-book parcel descriptions. The 1831–1833 deed-book pass read instruments page-by-page from the manuscript images (signed-in FamilySearch, 2026-09-20) — coordinates pending for all; legal descriptions unread. Where: Madison County Probate Office deed indexes (also flagged as needing a signed-in portal session). What it gives: the metes-and-bounds chain from the Jones/Perkins holdings to later owners.
- BLM GLO survey plat overlay, Huntsville Meridian. The original land-survey plats for the townships covering the Avalon tract, georeferenced against the modern parcel grid. Where: BLM GLO. What it gives: the section/township framework the deed descriptions were written against.
- 1966 UAH Campus Topographic Map georeference. The 1966 map (G.W. Jones & Sons / Atlantic Aerial Surveys, from the Avalon project archive) already underlies the UAH Campus Map's approximate structure placements. What it gives: georeferenced control points tying documented plantation structures to modern coordinates.
- City of Huntsville GIS parcels. Modern parcel boundaries to overlay against the deed-book chain and GLO plats. What it gives: the final leg of the deed chain — plantation acres to present-day campus and Arsenal parcels.
- Wesley Jones boundary call, S25 T3 R1W (1874). July 30, 1874 trustee deed boundary call — provisional lead, boundary unpinned, legal descriptions unread. Do not assume Wesley Jones's race from the boundary call. Lead.

Map data & sources
- Annotated will transcription (project archive) — Alexander P. Jones's 2,827-acre share of Lewellen Jones's estate; Northwestern Division, Madison County.
- U.S. Census, 1860 and 1850 slave schedules (manuscripts) — 96 and 139 enslaved people, respectively, read entry by entry (2026-09-21).
- UAH / Alabama Historical Association marker text — 35 associated structures (2019 announcement); the marker's "106 enslaved persons" is Alexander P. Jones's total 1860 schedule holdings — the Avalon-specific manuscript count is 96, and the distinction is now stated.
- Counter-Archive research notes (internal) — UAH campus land documents 1962–71 (CamScanner batch; 1964 assembly memo and 1971 easement legal descriptions); Madison County deed-book pass 1831–1833 (1831–1833 instruments read page-by-page, coordinates pending); locations tracker (map-locations/locations.md).
- 1966 UAH Campus Topographic Map (G.W. Jones & Sons / Atlantic Aerial Surveys, project archive) — the base source the UAH Campus Map's approximate placements are drawn against; georeference still owed.
Sources needed but not yet used on this page: BLM GLO survey plats (overlay), City of Huntsville GIS parcels, Madison County Probate Office deed indexes. They are named in the "Boundary data needed" panel above — not credited as sources because they have not yet been used.
