# The Silence Ledger
*Beyond Avalon — negative-evidence log. Published 2026-09-28. Every entry states what was searched, where, when, what came back, and the bound. A bound is not a conclusion: "no hit in these three reels" never means "never existed." Newest first. All statuses approved by the researcher, 2026-09-28.*

## 2026-09-28 — No Clift slaveholder in the 1850 or 1860 Madison County slave schedules

**Searched:** Every slaveholder entry in the 1850 Madison County slave schedule (NARA 7th Census, Reel 21, District 36 — John H. Clift's district) and the complete 1860 Madison County slave schedule (NARA M653 Reel 30), by visual read.
**Where:** Internet Archive items `7thcensus0021unit` and `populationschedu030unit`.
**When:** September 28, 2026.
**Result:** No Clift or Cliff appears as a slave owner on either schedule.
**Bound:** Both federal slave schedules bracketing the 1850s contain no Clift slaveholder. This does not rule out unrecorded hiring or bondage arrangements.
**Status:** CLOSED for the schedules.
**Source:** Project research notes, Clift Farm slave-schedule review (2026-09-27).

## 2026-09-28 — NARA M1900 Roll 15 absent from the Internet Archive set

**Searched:** All 34 Alabama units of the Internet Archive `recordsoffieldof*` series, reel by reel, reading each filmed NARA target card (PROJECT M1900 / ROLL NUMBER) at leaf ~n4.
**Where:** Internet Archive, `recordsoffieldof0001unit` through `recordsoffieldof0034unit`.
**When:** September 28, 2026.
**Result:** The set holds NARA rolls 1–14 and 16–34. Roll 15 is absent; Roll 28 is duplicated (units 21 and 28). Roll 15 is the only roll holding the Huntsville fair-copy contract volumes 81–83 — verified against the pamphlet intro that vols 81/82/83 appear nowhere else.
**Bound:** Contract #586 can neither be verified nor ruled out from the Internet Archive set. The Huntsville Docket of Trials (vol 84) and Register of Rations (vol 80) ride on the same missing roll.
**Update 2026-09-28:** Roll 15 was located viewable on FamilySearch (FHL film 2424731, DGS 7636357). Contract #586 was found there and visually verified the same day: No. 586, "Jesse. G. Jordan with Freedman," Madison County, March 9, 1866, for the year 1866; signer #18 of 20 freedmen is "Turner x Moore." The Internet Archive set's silence on Roll 15 stands — this entry's bound is unchanged.
**Status:** OPEN.
**Source:** Project research notes, contract #586 search log (2026-09-28).

## 2026-09-27/28 — Ten name negatives across the Freedmen's Bureau Alabama field-office reels

**Searched:** Three Internet Archive reels, read visually (no usable OCR exists — verified empty): `recordsoffieldof0013unit` (Huntsville Letters Sent, vols 1–4, 1,167 leaves — all four volumes' name indexes read name-by-name); `recordsoffieldof0015unit` (filmed target card proves this is NARA Roll 21, Mobile — not Huntsville; 1,081 leaves; full Register Vol 2 name index read); `recordsoffieldof0034unit` (Tuscaloosa complaints, hospital register, Tuscumbia/Tuskegee letters; 842 leaves; hospital register read name by name, ~600 admissions).
**Where:** Internet Archive.
**When:** September 27–28, 2026.
**Result:** No hit for any of the ten: Eliza/Elizabeth Jones, Columbus Jones, Reuben Jones, Turner Moore, Turner Jones, Simon, Tomietta Jones, Shandy Jones, Wade Jones, Spotswood/Spottswood. (David Jones is excluded from this negative: hospital register #317, M 26, admitted Dec 19 — a lead, not merged with Columbus's brother David.)
**Bound:** ~3,090 leaves across Huntsville, Mobile, and Tuscaloosa. Does not cover: the Tuscumbia fair-copy contracts Vol 160 (~570 pp., no index, sampled only); the Huntsville labor-contract books (a separate series, not on these reels); Vol 2 of the Huntsville letters has missing index letters (D–K, O–Q, U–V); "Moore Jenny 274" is an unresolved index/page mismatch, not a confirmed person.
**Status:** OPEN.
**Source:** Project research notes, Freedmen's Bureau field-reads memo (2026-09-27); paper note [538]. The ten bounded-negative notes were written to the live database September 28, 2026.

## 2026-09-27 — No patents to Irby Jones or any Llewellin/Llewellyn spelling

**Searched:** BLM GLO records (glorecords.blm.gov) for Madison County patents to Irby Jones or Lewellen/Llewellin/Llewellyn Jones, circa 1809–1825.
**Where:** BLM General Land Office Records, online.
**When:** September 27, 2026.
**Result:** Seven patents found for Lewellen Jones — all issued November 20, 1818, all in Township 4 South (Secs 1 & 12 T4S R1W, Sec 6 T4S R1E), co-patentees Leroy Pope (3) and David Moore (4). Zero patents to Irby Jones or any Llewellin/Llewellyn spelling.
**Bound:** The searched spellings in the GLO index. The GLO name search is fuzzy/tokenized; a misindexed entry would not surface.
**Status:** CLOSED for the searched spellings.
**Source:** Project research log (2026-09-27); BLM GLO patent search.

## 2026-09-27 — Zero "Turner Moore" in the 1867 Alabama voter registers

**Searched:** The entire ADAH voter1867 collection, exact-phrase searches, every spelling.
**Where:** Alabama Department of Archives and History, voter1867 database.
**When:** September 27, 2026.
**Result:** Zero hits for "Turner Moore" anywhere in the 1867 registers.
**Bound:** The 1867 registers only. The father (d. March 1867) would not appear — consistent with the negative. The 1866 contract #586 signer cannot be assigned to father vs. brother from this source; the do-not-merge stands.
**Status:** CLOSED. Reliable negative.
**Source:** Project research notes, Turner Moore plantation memo (2026-09-27).

## 2026-09-27 — No Eliza or Elizabeth Jones in Madison County free-colored censuses, 1830–1860

**Searched:** Nancy Rohr, *Free People of Color in Madison County, Alabama*, Appendix I — combined 1830–1860 transcription, text-searched.
**Where:** Rohr, *Free People of Color in Madison County, Alabama*, Appendix I (combined 1830–1860 transcription), searched 2026-09-27.
**When:** September 27, 2026.
**Result:** Jones entries in the transcription are only Kiziah, Nancy (×2), Sarah, and Sye (×2). No Eliza, Elizabeth, Evelina/Evalina, Ann, or Shandy Jones appears.
**Bound:** Rohr's Appendix I is a transcription; absences are negative evidence only. Elizabeth may have left Madison County, died, changed names, or evaded enumerators — Rohr warns all are possible.
**Status:** OPEN.
**Source:** Project research notes, Eliza Jones memo (2026-09-27).

## 2026-09-27 — No post-1820 trace of Elizabeth; no pre-1861 trace of Eliza

**Searched:** Madison County free-colored records (post-1820), all available traces of Eliza Jones before her death in fall 1861, and the 1860 census household reading for Columbus Jones.
**Where:** Madison County records; 1860 census manuscript.
**When:** September 27, 2026.
**Result:** No post-1820 trace of Elizabeth (manumitted December 11, 1820, age 40) in Madison County's free-colored records. No record places Eliza anywhere before 1861. The 1860 census household reading shows no older woman with Columbus.
**Bound:** The age gap alone does not disprove identity, but identity requires positive evidence and there is none. The maternity theory (Elizabeth as mother of Columbus/Reuben/Shandy) is "remote" on age grounds in the published scholarship. Do not merge.
**Status:** OPEN.
**Source:** Project research notes, Eliza Jones memo (2026-09-27).

## 2026-09-23 — No standalone Philip Jones entry in the Register of British Slave Traders

**Searched:** The Register of British Slave Traders (britishslavetraders.org) — site search plus Google site search — for a Philip Jones entry. James Jones's bio names "Joseph and Philip Jones (q.v.)" as presumed brothers and partners c. 1784–94.
**Where:** britishslavetraders.org, online.
**When:** September 23, 2026.
**Result:** No standalone Philip Jones entry exists. The "q.v." in James Jones's bio is plain text, not a link. (Joseph Jones has entry p_10404_0984.)
**Bound:** The register as published September 2026. Recheck when the register updates; try variant spellings; a Philip Jones will c. 1790s Bristol (PROB) is still unsearched.
**Status:** OPEN.
**Source:** Project research notes, British register follow-up (2026-09-23).

## 2026-09-23 — Free-route sweep, batch 4: six negatives

**Searched:** Free online routes only — no paywalls, no purchases.
**Where:** Various free sources per the project's staged free-route specs.
**When:** September 23, 2026.
**Result:** Negatives recorded for: (1) the William Jones will; (2) the Jones–Reynolds marriage settlement, C 54; (3) Shadrach Tipton's live patent record; (4) the Willie Fay/Faye name trail; (5) the USGenWeb T-surname GLO delegation; (6) FreeREG result pages.
**Bound:** Free routes only. The interactive browser-delegation specs (BLM GLO, TNA Discovery, FreeREG, Bristol Archives, HathiTrust) were staged but not attempted at the time.
**Status:** OPEN.
**Source:** Project research notes, free-routes investigation log (2026-09-23).

## 2026-09-23 — No Lewellen/Llewellyn Jones in the Madison County USGenWeb GLO transcription

**Searched:** The free USGenWeb GLO transcription for Madison County.
**Where:** USGenWeb transcription.
**When:** September 23, 2026.
**Result:** No Lewellen/Llewellyn Jones appears anywhere in the Madison County transcription.
**Bound:** The transcription only — a limited negative. The land question remains unresolved; live BLM confirmation still needed.
**Status:** CLOSED for the transcription.
**Source:** Project research log (2026-09-23).

## 2026-09-23 — No Wilson Jones in free-index 1870 traces

**Searched:** Free-index 1870 census traces (New Market P.O. and vicinity).
**Where:** Free census index.
**When:** September 23, 2026.
**Result:** Traces found for Robert Criner (New Market P.O., p. 256) and George T. Jones (p. 259). No Wilson Jones found.
**Bound:** Free index only — a limited negative.
**Status:** OPEN.
**Source:** Project research log (2026-09-23).

---

## 2026-09-20 — No Alabama patents to Shandy Jones or Columbus Jones

**Searched:** BLM GLO records, exact-phrase Alabama searches for "Shandy Jones" and "Columbus Jones."
**Where:** BLM General Land Office Records, online.
**When:** September 20, 2026.
**Result:** Zero patents for either name.
**Bound:** The GLO name search is fuzzy/tokenized, so an exact-phrase zero is a clean negative for the indexed name. Does not rule out misindexed or variant-spelling entries. Neither man's landholding — if any — came through a federal patent in his own name.
**Status:** CLOSED for the indexed name.
**Source:** Project research notes, GLO update (2026-09-20); paper note [159].

**Where:** PDF of AHQ v.6 no.4 (1944), pulled and read.
**When:** September 27, 2026.
**Result:** No Nathan Jones hit. Retained as a documented negative.

## "Should exist but doesn't" — interpretive entries (approved for publication 2026-09-28)

*These are readings of the silences, not search results.*

**A. The maternal line stays cold.** Elizabeth was manumitted December 11, 1820, at age forty — and then the Madison County record never names her again. Eliza Jones died in the fall of 1861 — and no record names her before that year. Two Black women, forty-one years apart, each entering the archive exactly once: once at manumission, once at death. The archive that should record free Black women in Madison County holds neither of them anywhere else. *Status: OPEN. Source: project research notes, Eliza Jones memo (2026-09-27).*

**B. "Moore Jenny 274."** The Huntsville Letters Sent Vol 1 back index names a Jenny Moore at manuscript page 274. The page holds only a surgeon-assignment letter and a Blount County supply letter — no Jenny Moore. An index entry for a woman the archive cannot produce. She is not a confirmed person. *Status: OPEN — needs a targeted sweep of Vol 1 ms pp. 265–285. Source: project research notes, Freedmen's Bureau field-reads memo (2026-09-27).*

**C. The structural silence.** Slave schedules name no enslaved person, ever. Eliza's absence from them is not evidence of anything — it is how the record was built. This is the ledger's method, not an entry: some silences are searched and empty; some were never given a place to speak. *Published as framing. Source: project research notes, Eliza Jones memo (2026-09-27).*

*Entry count: 13 search entries + 3 interpretive entries. A bound is not a conclusion.*
